Even physical health is dramatically affected by feelings of social connectedness. But little has been understood about how people’s perceptions of their own social life and the social lives of those around them affect their emotions(但是,人们对自己的社会生活和周围人的社会生活的看法如何影响他们的情绪,却知之甚少). Another question is whether these perceptions, however accurate, affect people’s abilities to form friendships.(另一个问题是,这些认知无论多么准确,是否会影响人们交朋友的能力。)

A majority of first-year college students believe their peers have more friends and are hanging out more than they are, according to a new paper from faculty members at Harvard Business School (HBS) and Harvard Medical School (HMS).

In a study of 1,099 freshmen in their first semester at a public university in Vancouver, Canada, 48 percent assumed that other freshmen had more close friends than they did. Only 31 percent thought they had more close friends than their peers, while just 21 percent believed they had the same number. When asked whose social circle was larger, 45 percent thought others had more friendly acquaintances than they did themselves. Estimating that others had more exciting social lives was consistent across gender and ethnicity, and was true whether a student had gone to a local high school or came from out of town.

Studying a second group of freshmen over their first two years of college, the researchers found that those who believed other students had only moderately more friends than they did later reported making more close friends and social acquaintances during the academic year, suggesting that perceiving a small-but-conquerable gap in friendships may serve to motivate students to socialize more.

Ashley Whillans, the paper’s lead author and an assistant professor at HBS, said prior research showed that people tended to overestimate how smart and capable they themselves really are(人们往往高估自己的聪明和能力), so she was somewhat surprised by the findings.

The message people can take away from this research, Whillans said, is that the feelings you are not doing as well as other people when you’re new to a social environment are normal. Chances are that other people are feeling that way too, and that can actually be motivating.(当你刚进入一个社会环境时,你的感觉不如他人,这是正常的。很有可能其他人也有这种感觉,这实际上可以激励你。)

Attending a college or university in the United States is very expensive. A prominent four-year university can cost almost $50,000 per year, and this does not include the huge extra costs of housing, transportation, and other living expenses. Most four-year colleges cost at least $10,000, and many more are in the $20,000 to $30,000 range. For families in the United States, paying for the education of their children has become a major expense. Many families begin saving money from the time their children are born, and some states offer encouraging plans for savings programs.

As expensive as the tuition is, it should be noted that this hardly covers all the cost of providing an education. Buildings, equipment, and salary costs are increasingly high, with advanced technology adding tremendous costs. Universities and colleges constantly seek support from foundations, corporations, as well as from local, state, or federal government.

Still, for prospective students, the costs can be too high. Students may have jobs in secondary school or college to help earn money for college tuition or other expenses, such as books, transportation, and housing. Colleges also help students find work to offset the costs.

There are two main types of funding for college: student loans and grants. Student loans are borrowed money that must be paid back, although the interest rates are lower than for some other types of loans. The early years of many students’ careers after graduation are spent trying to pay back loans. Grants, including scholarships, are gifts of money that do not have to be paid back, but students must fulfill certain obligations, such as maintaining a certain grade point average or demonstrating family need, in order to qualify. Scholarships are funds that are earned or competed for, and they may be based on the student’s academic, athletic, or civic performance. Identifying and accessing these funds can be confusing for families when they fill in the application forms. Colleges, secondary schools, and other organizations have offices to help students learn about funding resources.

46)

A. pay $50,000 per year for their children’s living expenses at universities

D. save money for their children’s higher education as early as they can

47)

What do universities and colleges do when faced with money shortages?

A. They cut back on unnecessary expenses.

B. They reduce cost by means of advanced technology.

C. They turn to governments and institutions for help.

D. They raise tuition fees and other living expenses on campus.

48)

What can we learn from Para. 3?

A. Students do part-time jobs to pay their secondary school fees and living expenses.

B. Students do part-time jobs to pay their college tuition and living expenses.

College freshmen are spending less time socializing with friends and partying, and more time interacting through online social networks and studying. Perhaps as a result, students’ emotional health has dropped to an all-time low, according to a survey by the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

“When students are spending more time studying and less time socializing, they’re not having a way to release some of that stress,” says Kevin Eagan, lead author of a report on the survey’s findings. “Those two factors combined may be contributing to added levels of feeling overwhelmed as they come into college.”

By surveying more than 150,000 freshmen at 227 four-year colleges in the United States, researchers at UCLA, found that, over the past quarter-century, self-reported rates of time spent socializing in person with others have essentially flipped: In 1987, 37.9 percent of incoming freshmen socialized at least 16 hours per week with friends, while 18.1 percent socialized for five hours or less. In 2014, those figures were 18 and 38.8 percent – an all-time low and an all-time high, respectively.

At the same time, college freshmen report increased interaction through social media. The percentage of students who spend six hours or more each week using social media has increased by 44 percent, from 18.9 percent in 2007 to 27.2 percent in 2014.

Also on the decline is students’ self-reported emotional health. Students who began college in 2014 entered with the lowest-ever level of emotional health, with just 50.7 percent reporting above-average emotional health. And the number of students who frequently felt depressed jumped from a low of 6.1 percent in 2009 to 9.5 percent in 2014.

Students who felt depressed were also more likely to report being disengaged from school. They were twice as likely to frequently come to class late or to fall asleep in class. They additionally were more likely to feel bored in class and less likely to work with others on group projects.

51)

One possible reason why students’ emotional well-being declines is that ________.
